Better Postal service through 3G technology

COLOMBO: Post and Telecommunication Minister D. M. Jayaratne said the 3 G technology system has now been introduced to Sri Lanka's postal service to provide more efficient service to the public.

Speaking at the World Postal Day at the BMICH on Sunday, Minister Jayaratne said private sector assistance is being sought to fully develop the postal service on modern lines.

"My goal is to introduce a fully fledged postal service that would eliminate all shortcomings" the Minister said.

He said next year his Ministry will embark on several new projects to improve the postal services including the introduction of modern technology.

The Minister said steps are under way to introduce an electronic ID card for students in place of the current ID card.

Addressing the gathering Post Master General K. A. S. Senadheera said: "The postal service which commenced in 1874 had undergone several changes and is in the process of modernisation. Over 20,000 employees currently are in the postal service, he added.

A new Rs. 40 stamp was issued to mark the occasion. The stamp was presented to the Minister by student Kanchana Imesha Hewavitarane who was responsible for drawing the picture depicting in the stamp.

She was presented with an award for her effort .

The Sri Lanka Insurance said it would present 50 push bicycles to the 50 best postmen.
