S.W.R.D. laid foundation for vast Social revolution in country - WP Governor

COLOMBO: Western Province Governor S.Alavi Mowlana, in a message in commemoration of the 47th death anniversary of the late Prime Minister S.W.R.D.Bandaranaike states that the late Premier was a personality of an epoch in the true sense of the word who laid the foundation to bring about a vast social revolution in this country.

After breaking away from the United National Party, the late Premier together with his colleagues like the late D.A.Rajapaksa, the father of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, consolidated the strength of all progressive forces in the Country 50 years ago in 1956 and received a massive public mandate to go ahead with his Socialist policies which resulted in the establishment of the Employees' Provident Fund, the Nationalisation of the public transport network and the recognition of May 01 as the day of the working class in Sri Lanka.

He fostered diplomatic relations with Socialist countries like China and Russia and believed in decentralization of power to achieve social justice, the message stated.

The Governor's message further appreciated the pains taken by the late Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike, the beloved wife of the late leader and their daughter former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga as well as the present President Mahinda Rajapaksa who unremittingly forged ahead with the policies initiated by the late leader.

The late Prime Minister S.W.R.D.Bandaranaike loved and trusted the people. The people reciprocated. Yet a few reacted differently and his progressive journey was ended on September 25, 1959.
