Eastern civilians placing implicit trust in Forces
TRINCOMALEE: The Government yesterday said the troops are in full
control of Muttur and Trincomalee area and assured there was no need for
the civilians to flee their homes and villages.
Government Defence spokesman Minister keheliya Rambukwella said the
troops have secured command of most of the East, particularly in
Trincomalee area and the situation in Muttur is "quite normal."
Around 25 families living in the proximity of Army, Navy and Air
Force bases in Trincomalee and Muttur late last week fled their houses
fearing an LTTE attack, the Minister said.
"But now they too are returning," the Minister said adding that
troops will do their utmost to protect civilians.
Rambukwella said the Government had strengthened security measures
that were in force during the last few months and the civilians too
assured of their security have pledged their trust in the Forces.
"The LTTE is still circulating their leaflets demanding civilian
withdrawal from Muttur and certain other areas, but apparently the
people have placed their trust in the forces," the Minister said.
"Troops are receiving a huge public support and they are having the
highest morale," Rambukwella said.
Commenting on yesterday's incident where the Navy attacked nine LTTE
craft off Mullaitivu coast he said the incident shows the strength of
the troops.(RS) |
