SLT court case final determination pending
APPEAL: The Consumer Association of Lanka filed a case in the Court
of Appeal challenging the approval granted by the Telecommunications
Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) and the Minister, for the
tariff revision implemented by Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT). The Court of
Appeal delivered the order in favour of Consumer Association of Lanka.
This was stated in a media release issued by Public Relations Office,
Sri Lanka Telecom. Both SLT and TRCSL appealed against this order in
August 2005 and the Supreme Court having been satisfied of the existence
of a prima facia case in appeal was pleased to grant both SLT and the
TRCSL special leave to appeal to the Supreme Court from the said order
of the Court of Appeal.
Therefore the appeals were taken up for hearing in the Supreme Court
on 18th September 2006 before a bench comprising Chief Justice Sarath N.
Silva, and Justices Raja Fernando and Amaratunga. The counsel for SLT
made a detailed submission on behalf of SLT on substantive issues and
thereafter the case was refixed to be resumed for further submission of
counsel for SLT, on 11th December 2006.
As such this case is still pending final determination by the Supreme
Court and no orders have been made as yet. |
