Karunanayake helps SSC to 265/5

CRICKET: All rounder Shalika Karunanayake hit a splendid
unbeaten half century to help SSC reach a healthy first innings total of
265 for 5 on the opening day of their Sri Lanka Cricket under 23
division one tournament final against the traditional rivals NCC played
at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday.
Karunanayake batting at number five steadied the SSC middle order
with a polished 65 not out from 87 balls stroking seven fours and two
sixes.
He dominated an unfinished sixth wicket partnership of 86 runs with
his partner Janudika Sriyapala whose contribution was a valuable 29
runs.
The pair came together at 179 for 5 and remained until the end before
heavy ran forced the umpires to call off the game early with a total of
18 overs still left for the day.
This was after skipper Damith Indika and Kaushal Silva had put on 73
runs for the fourth wicket.
This stand was quite an important one for SSC who had lost two
wickets in succession at that stage. But Damith Indika and Kaushal Silva
laid the foundation for a good first innings total with some intelligent
batting.
Indika played a real captains innings where he faced a total of 116
balls for his knock of 42 which was studded with six fours. SSC of
course got off a solid start with the openers Randev Fernando and Dilhan
Cooray putting on 47 runs after they had been put into bat.
