Van with weapons apprehended

MEDAWACHCHIYA: A van was apprehended with two suicide jackets,
a claymore mine and several other dangerous items at a Police checkpoint
at 12.30 p.m. in Medawachchiya yesterday.

The Media Centre for the National Security Unit said that the Hi-ace
van was travelling from Medawachchiya towards Colombo when it was taken
into custody.

Two suicide jackets, a powerful claymore mine, two electronic
circuits, and a remote control were found hidden inside a false
floorboard of the Hi-ace van, Defence sources said.
The driver, who was alone in the van was arrested by police manning
the checkpoint. The dangerous items found in the van were believed to be
transported by the LTTE to Colombo. |
