Amputation of baby's finger: Nurse sued

COLOMBO: Nimeshka Kavindi Abeysekara whose finger was amputated immediately after her birth at the De Soyza Hospital last year sued the nurse and the Attorney General stating that it was the negligence of a Government servant and claimed Rs 10 million as compensation.

N.K. Abeysekara's guardian Ajith Abeysekara of Jayamawatha, Wellampitiya cited the Attorney General and Horagalpe Deepani Samudrika Kumari as defendants.

A. Abeysekara in the petition filed before the Colombo District Court through Attorney Ms. Anuradha Gunawardana stated that Kavindi was born at the De Soyza Hospital on May 14, 2005 and a canula was fixed on her left hand and it was removed on May 19. While it was being removed a part of the baby's small finger in the left hand was cut off negligently by the said nurse.

Plaintiff claimed Rs 10 million as compensation.
