Housing project
AMBALANGODA: The Salvation Army of Canada and Bermuda and the
Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) participated in the
handing over ceremony for 100 houses to tsunami victims in the Galle
district, with the opening of the Galagodawatte housing project in
Ambalangoda on September 2.
This group of 100 new homes for tsunami victims is the first part of
the Rs. 905 million tsunami reconstruction project implemented by
Salvation Army Sri Lanka with funding from its international partners
(Canada, United States, Netherlands), through public donations to the
Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda and the Government of Canada's
matching grants programme for tsunami relief and reconstruction.
Representing the Canadian High Commission, the First Secretary
(Development), Calvin R. Piggott said CIDA was pleased to support the
Salvation Army and its global partners in providing over 500 houses,
water and sanitation facilities, livelihoods training for over 1,000
women and their families, and community-based tsunami early warning
systems for disaster preparedness in these communities. |
