Zahira clinch Super Sixteen Trophy

SOCCER: Zahira College Colombo, clinched the coveted 'Samsung' Super Sixteen Soccer Trophy in grand style by beating arch rivals Isipathana College 4 goals to nil in front of a capacity crowd at Zahira grounds Maradana on 2nd September.

Zahira played an outstanding game showing their class throughout the tournament. Nippy Fazaal was the day's pick since he goaled twice within minutes in the finals and the other goal shooters were M. Shafraz and M. Zain one each.

The Zahira lads played a fast and accurate game but Isipathana could not have a breakthrough at any stage.

This tournament was declared open at 8.30 a.m. by Abdul Ahad (Deputy Principal Zahira), Rizmi Marzook (President Past Prefects Association and Upali Silva (Secretary Sri Lanka Schools Football Association) by hoisting the National and college flags with the College band in attendance.

More than 200 participants from 16 top schools took part in thins grand finale in the under 18 Super Sevens Tournament while the refereeing was handled by the members of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) who did a fantastic job with the whistle.

This tournament was sponsored by The Phone Centre, the authorised agent for Samsung Phones in Sri Lanka, while the chief guest was O.H. Sulaiman, Also present were Fauzul Hameed (Chairman of the Board of Governors Zahira College) Thasleem Amman (Strategic Business Unit Manager Amana Takaful Insurance) graced the occasion, and gave away the awards.

The Co-sponsors were Dialog Telecom, Yes FM/Sirasa/Shakthi and MTV while the package sponsors were Laksiri Group of Companies, Amana Takaful Insurance Ltd., Red Bull-Energy Drink, American Premium Water System, The Traveller and the Group of 60s' of Zahira College.

This tournament was organised by Past Prefects Association under the Project Advisor Shahey Faleel, and his dynamic set of Past Prefects did an untiring job which was the reason for this tournament's success.

Before the cup presentation was held, a Kandyan Cultural dance display was given by the Sri Lanka Police Reserve band, which added more colour to this tournament.

The Results: Cup Final: Zahira College Colombo beat Isipathana 4 goals to nil.

Plate Final: St. Benedict's College beat Hindu College Colombo 4 goals to nil.

Other Awards: The Fair Play Trophy Sponsored by Sirasa/MBC/MTV was won by St. Benedicts College, Colombo. Best Goal Keeper Trophy sponsored by Red Bull Energy Drinks, was won by M. Shaheed of Zahira College, Colombo.

Player of the Tournament sponsored by Group of 60s' was won by M. Zain of Zahira College who scored 6 goals during the tournament.

Cup Runner-up trophy sponsored by Amana Takaful Insurance with a cash prize of Rs. 15,000 was won by Isipathana College, while the Plate Runner-up trophy sponsored by Laksiri Group of Companies with a cash award of Rs. 5,000 was won by Hindu College, Colombo 4.
