Naweed Ghany blasts unbeaten century

CRICKET: S. Thomas' College Mt. Lavinia beat Dharmaraja College Kandy by 93 runs in their under-17 Astra Cup Cricket tournament match played at Mt. Lavinia recently. Taking first lease of the wicket the Thomians were in a bad way losing four of their top order batsmen for 70 runs in 26 overs.

Then a partnership of 72 runs between Shanil Wijesinghe and Naweed Ghany took the score to 142 before Wijesinghe was out in the 10th over.

Then Ghany broke loose and took the score to 217 for 7 when S. Thomas declared in the 49th over.

In his chanceless and entertaining innings of 105 not out, Ghany hammered 8 fours and 7 sixes.

Dharmaraja in their turn went about bravely in their chase but lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for 114 in 38.5 overs with N. Fernando and H.N.C. Fonseka capturing 4 and 3 wickets respectively.

With 10 remaining overs the Thomians rattled up a quick 95 and lost 7 wickets in their second innings. Ghany once again top scored with a blistering 46.

S. Thomas' 217 for 7 Dec in 49 overs, (N. Ghany 105 not out, S. Wijesinghe 26, V. Weerawardena 26, C. Ratnayake 3 for 48, M. Bambaradeniya 2 for 48.) and 95 for 7 in 10 overs (N. Ghany 46, C. Ratnayake 3 for 37, M.T. Silva 2 for 20).

Dharmaraja 114 all out in 38.5 overs (Y.R. Seneviratne - 32, P.D. Nanayakkara 28 not-out N. Fernando 4 for 23, C. Fonseka 3 for 19.)
