National literary festival in A'pura next week

COLOMBO: The National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) has taken measures to build a special latrine system for nearly 30,000 people who were displaced due to Muttur conflict and living in temporary shelters in Kantale town and suburbs, states a press release issued by the NHDA.

Minister of Housing and Construction Ferial Ashraff has advised NHDA to take immediate action to construct a latrine system as there is a danger spreading various diseases among people living in temporary shelters of these camps due to insufficiency of lavatory facilities.

As a result 110 lavatories have been constructed within a short period of 2 weeks. NHDA District Manager of Trincomalee said that in addition to above latrine units, 72 units will be constructed under the second phase of this project.

Most of these lavatories have been constructed within the temporary camps established in school premises of the area and therefore these lavatories could be sued for the needs of the schools after removing the camps. The UNICEF has provided financial assistance for construction of these lavatories.
