Security measures can be relaxed if situation improves - PM
COLOMBO: The Government hopes to relax some of the stringent
security measures now in place as the situation improves, Prime Minister
Ratnasiri Wickremanayake told Parliament yesterday.
Making the winding up speech on an adjournment motion by UNP MP
Lakshman Yapa Abeywardane, Prime Minister Wickremanayake said a certain
measure of inconvenience to the public was inevitable in the present
high security environment. However, the Government was constantly
reviewing the situation and would relax certain measures as the
environment gets more conducive.
"Terrorism must be defeated. We have imposed tough security measures
as there might be unwanted incidents elsewhere when there are operations
in the North-East.
We target terrorists, not innocent people, he said.
He said certain civil liberties are always affected in this type of
environment, but the Government was making every attempt to minimise
them. The country's security was paramount. The public will have to bear
with the authorities who aim for the greatest good of the greatest
number. The Government would discuss with all relevant stakeholders on
formulating security measures which will minimise inconvenience to the
public.
He said parking restrictions have been imposed on all major roads to
ensure public security. The Government realised the problems faced by
three wheeler operators in this regard. They are now allowed to park on
by roads to pick up passengers. However, these rules could be released
if the security situation improves.
In his adjournment motion, MP Abeywardane said parking restrictions
have adversely affected three wheeler operators and drivers islandwide.
This has cut off their customers and hence, income. He urged the
Government to resolve this problem. |
