Electricity tariff increased

COLOMBO: Electricity tariff will be increased from today, a Power and Energy Ministry release said yesterday.

According to the statement there will be no change in the first 30 units but there will be an increase of one rupee for each unit that exceeds 30 unit limit up to 90 units.

An increase of Rs. 1.50 will be effected for each unit that exceeds the 90 limit. The release stated that public opinion had been sought for the increase by the government gazette dated July 19.

The public was given a month to forward suggestions. The statement said the measure was taken to minimise losses incurred due to the increasing oil prices in the world market.
