 The Police Department which is often at the receiving end of loads of brickbats and vicious barbs for perceived lack of initiative in the detection of crime and the arrest of suspects could justifiably take a bow from its life saving feat yesterday when an alert Police Constable detected a suspicious parcel and promptly summoned assistance. US charges eight with backing Tigers

The United States unveiled on Monday charges against eight accused of supporting the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Authorities said they had unsealed two complaints against defendants who had been in close contact with the LTTE and some of them had met with its leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran.
