Catchy classics

MUSIC: The Russian Cultural Centre (RCC) in Colombo was the
venue of an evening of music, vocal and instrumental.
Though space is limited at the RCC and parking is near impossible, it
was appropriate that the RCC with its great heritage of music should
host this programme.
This was a two evening event. I was there on the second night.
All those who entertained us both with their instrumental and vocal
talents were good.
In the midst if this gallery of Colombo's "stars" from the "world" of
local talent, the item that moved me most was Soul Sounds directed by
Soundarie David, with her as the pianist and with Neranjan de Silva on
keyboards.
The girls from Holy Family Convent, who sang in this event, stole the
show. They were the belles of the ball!
The climax, the rendering of Dhanno Budunge was splendid. Coming from
Trinity in Kandy, I was familiar with Walter Senior's Hymm for Ceylon
that used this music.
So, it was wonderful to listen to these girls from the Convent.
Driving back home, I was wondering whether the sentiments of this song
could be translated into action so that our Land, that once knew peace,
can still have that most wanted of all commodities, peace - Shalom.
I am sure we can continue to hope and pray and act. In the meantime,
my thanks to all those responsible for this excellent programme. May we
have more of this? |
