ARTIST: Jayasiri Semage

When the Maestro Kalasoori Jayasiri Semage holds an exhibition of his
paintings, he is certain to reminisce on his first exhibition held about
50 years ago as a schoolboy.
Since then his paintings have graced the walls of 30 other galleries,
several of them overseas. A few of his works may be seen on permanent
display in the Buddhist Viharas of Malaysia, Singapore, Penang and Sri
Lanka and the UN Headquarters in Geneva - the first and only exhibition
by an Sri Lankan there.
"Jayasiri Semage's contribution to the identity of Sri Lankan
painting" emphasises Prof. Chandima Wijebandara has already assumed
legendary heights. No one has yet surpassed him in representing feminine
beauty in line and colour.
EXHIBIT: ‘Damsels’
|
His 'Damsels' carry their own identity and are well recognisable as
Semage's beauties. Semage's 'Damsels' know no sorrow nor unhappiness.
They are a bunch of happy, sexy and almost divine beauties. They
symbolise a positive, creative and aesthetic philosophy of life.
Does this mean that Semage is all mundane and a naughty artist who
neglects all supra-mundane ideologies. Not at all. He is perfectly
competent in depicting spiritual themes and almost Zen where he switches
over to higher areas in Buddhist culture. |
