PRESIDENT INSPECTS RELIEF SHIP
President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited the Colombo Port last evening to inspect the vessel carrying 3,800 tons of essential food items to the North and East. Here, President accompanied by Ministers Maithreepala Sirisena and Douglas Devananda talking to Navy Commander Rear. Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda after inspecting and inquiring about the goods on board the ship, which left the harbour yesterday. The vessel was dispatched from Colombo by the Government and will be received by the Jaffna Government Agent to be distributed among the internally displaced in the region. The vessel will sail under the ICRC flag. The Government said that it has already taken steps to provide assistance to the needy in Trincomalee, Anuradhapura, Batticaloa and Jaffna through the District Secretaries. After ten days of intense fighting, the Security Forces yesterday further consolidated their positions in Muhamalai and Kilaly Forward Defence Lines in Jaffna as the intensity of the LTTE artillery and mortar fire eased yesterday consequent to limited operations conducted by the Air Force over the weekend taking on identified LTTE targets.
