The proposed university is the successful outcome of a partnership agreement that was arranged with the prestigious Salzburg School of Tourism and Hotel Management during a recent visit to Austria by the Governor of the Southern Province Kingsley T. Wickramaratne.

"Over 70 percent of the tourist hotels in the country are located in the Southern Province and hence we decided to build this institute here in order to give a professional training for those employed in the hospitality industry," Governor of the Southern Province Kingsley T. Wickramaratne said.

He said the Salzburg institute of Tourism and Hotel Management in Austria will invest three to four million Euros to establish the management of the hotel school, the curriculum, to install software and hardware for the virtual kitchen, catering and virtual travel office.

"Initially short-term diploma courses will be offered for those employed in the industry. Discussions are underway with the University Grants Commission to conduct Degree and Masters courses with provision for students to complete the final year at the Salzburg University in Austria at a discounted fee," Governor Wickramaratne said.

Prof. Mag Leonard Wondel, Head of the University of Tourism and Hotel Management and Prof. Andrea Monsberger are coordinators for the Hotel School in Koggala.

Prof. Monsberger will be assigned resident Dean of Ruhuna-Austria University of Tourism and Hotel Management.

The SPC will have a lease agreement for 60 years under a BOI scheme. Operations of the Koggala Institute will be on a profit sharing basis.

In October this year a delegation headed by Prof. Wondel and Prof. Monsberger will visit the southern province to carry out detailed plans with the Chief Minister of the SPC and his delegation.

Work between the Salzburg Institute and the SPC are coordinated by the ambassador in Austria Aruni Wijewardane.
