Medical treatment for injured LTTEers on humanitarian grounds

COLOMBO: The Government will extend facilities for medical treatment of injured LTTE cadres on humanitarian grounds, a release from the Department of Government Information said.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa announced this decision at a meeting with representatives of political parties that supported his candidature at the last Presidential Elections.

The political parties attended represented National parties, Tamil and Muslim parties as well as socialist and liberal parties.

The President made it clear that it is the Government's duty and responsibility to ensure that medical facilities are available to all citizens of the country. He pointed out that the Government granted permission to LTTE Spokesman Daya Master to avail medical treatment on the same principle.

Any injured member of the LTTE would also be assisted on humanitarian grounds. The President also clarified that the Government has not launched any offensive and the Security Forces have only retaliated in self defence after the LTTE launched a major offensive.

Despite LTTE attacks, the Government will assist the injured LTTE cadres to get medical treatment on humanitarian grounds, the President said.
