ARTS: Interested in arts from a very young age, Jayamali Weerasinghe,
participating in various exhibitions and competitions, has been awarded
a large number of certificates and trophies for her splendid
contributions to society as a talented and now experienced artist.
Schooling at the Swarnamalee Balika Vidyalaya Kandy, this grade 13
student, is a hard working, enthusiastic artist, that strives arduously
to regain the appreciation and knowledge of ordinary people towards the
forgotten ancient tradition, intrinsic to the eastern world, of line
drawing using water colours.
Practising the ancient style of drawing under several veteran
artists, including the famous water colour artist, M.D.S. Gunatilake,
Jayamali while crediting several of her school art teachers for helping
her to harness her new found ability, explained that, the new generation
of art lovers tend to ignore the hard work that goes into creating a
piece of line drawing, as they are mostly caught up in the new style of
the western world which is rapidly revolutionizing the art world,
forcing artists pursuing to preserve ancient art skills deeper into the
crevice.
Hoping to contribute at least ten of her creations to an exhibition
that will take place from August 16 to 30 at the Tilanka Hotel, Kandy
these contributions will mainly display her talent at line drawing.
Competition
Many of her creations are based on the Life of the Buddha, and she
explained how line drawing and her accurate and partial use of water
colours allows her to capture the characteristic simplicity of the
Bhudha's era.

Her talent is indeed not limited to line drawing and water colours,
she also displays her talent for much landscape drawing. While Jayamali
is an exceptional artist, she also displays a knack for Mathematics, and
she's also a skilled carrom player.
An innovative artist, always heading the organizing committee of a
major school art competition, it is no wonder that Jayamali has been
able to accomplish so many fine achievements in a span of two to three
years.
Exhibition
Winning first place in 2005 and second place in 2006, at the Swarna
Mahal Vesak Art Competition, the owner of the Tilanka hotel himself,
Thanuj Gunawardhana had invited Jayamali to contribute to the
exhibition, along with Pradeep Munasinghe from the Peradeniya
University, and Asanka Siriwardhana from the Kelaniya University who
will also be contributing their fine art work to the exhibition.
"A lot of people helped me to get me where I am today and I am
grateful and thankful to each and everyone of them without the help of
Mrs. Vijitha Kumarahami, Mrs. Vasantha Kumari, Mrs. M.D.S. Gunatilake,
Mrs. Shrimanthi Herath, my parents and the rest of my family I wouldn't
be the artist I am today," reminisced Jayamali.
