Archaeological research project
COLOMBO: A seminar and workshop based on the data uncovered in
the course of an archaeological research project jointly carried out by
the Archaeological Study Divisions of the Kelaniya University and the
Universities of Durham, Bradford, Sterling and Leister of England was
conducted at the Sociology Meeting Hall of the Kelaniya University
yesterday.
Kelaniya University Vice Chancellor Prof. M.J.S. Wijayaratne, Dean of
the Faculty of Sociology Prof. Sunanda Maddumabandara, Archaeological
Director General Dr. Senarath Dissanayake and the Directors of the
Project participated.
The third phase of the Archaeological Research Project supervised by
Head of the Archaeological Division of the Kelaniya University Dr.
Priyashantha Gunawardena and Head of the Archaeological Division of
Durham University Professor Robin Kaningham, commenced on July 11 and
ended yesterday.
The project's principal objective was to ascertain the cultural,
economic, social and religious evolution of Anuradhapura up to the times
of the new town carved outside the ancient city and the extent to which
the ancient civilisation influenced the emergence of the new town and
how far the two entities affect each other. |
