COLOMBO: A seminar and workshop based on the data uncovered in the course of an archaeological research project jointly carried out by the Archaeological Study Divisions of the Kelaniya University and the Universities of Durham, Bradford, Sterling and Leister of England was conducted at the Sociology Meeting Hall of the Kelaniya University yesterday.

Kelaniya University Vice Chancellor Prof. M.J.S. Wijayaratne, Dean of the Faculty of Sociology Prof. Sunanda Maddumabandara, Archaeological Director General Dr. Senarath Dissanayake and the Directors of the Project participated.

The third phase of the Archaeological Research Project supervised by Head of the Archaeological Division of the Kelaniya University Dr. Priyashantha Gunawardena and Head of the Archaeological Division of Durham University Professor Robin Kaningham, commenced on July 11 and ended yesterday.

The project's principal objective was to ascertain the cultural, economic, social and religious evolution of Anuradhapura up to the times of the new town carved outside the ancient city and the extent to which the ancient civilisation influenced the emergence of the new town and how far the two entities affect each other.
