Hybrid seeds introduced to increase harvest

AGRICULTURE: The Agricultural Development Ministry has introduced
high yielding hybrid seeds to gain an abundant harvest from various crop
cultivation. The Department of Agriculture implements this hybrid seeds
production program.
Minister Chamal Rajapaksa said that the Ministry hopes for bountiful
cropping with the introducing of those seeds for the yala season this
year. “This step would vastly improve the agri based productivity in the
country,” the Minister said.
The program was implemented sometime back and after introducing the
program, the paddy harvest had been increased by 20 percent. Five metric
tonnes of paddy productivity from 250 hectares are expected. Maize
cultivation has also shown a 25 percent growth.
Vegetable crops including brinjal and tomatoes have shown 60 percent
growth. In addition luffa, capsicum, bitter gourd, ladies fingers and
guava will gain a good harvest with the introduction of hybrid seeds.
