DUA urges to uphold CMC dignity
COLOMBO: Reacting to the mayhem at the Colombo Municipal
Council at its inaugural session Secretary General of the Democratic
Unity Alliance (DUA) Irshad Mahboob called upon the councillors to
uphold the dignity of the council stating that men of honour had held
such posts in the past and they have conducted themselves in an
exemplary manner.
"Present day councillors must emulate them and prove that they are
worthy of their memories," said Mahboob. "After all you are called city
fathers now and you must be able to set examples to the younger
generation," he said.
"Our nation is facing a major crisis today and what is needed most is
a sense of decorum in the council as in all other institutions where
people have elected representatives to serve them," the DUA Secretary
General said.
He said that what was needed at present was that all politicians to
have close ranks and join each other to serve the nation so that
democratic principles this country had enjoyed for years could be
maintained and promoted.
"Otherwise we might have a replay of the wild west in the country,"
he said.
The Democratic Unity Alliance had two of its members elected to the
Colombo Municipal Council at the first election they faced. |
