Mahela cops 20 percent fine
CRICKET: Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene was docked 20 percent
of his match fee for breaking the stumps after his dismissal on the
third day of the third and final cricket Test against England at Trent
Bridge, Nottingham here.
Jayawardene smashed his leg stump out of the ground with his bat
after edging a harmless delivery from Liam Plunkett to wicket keeper
Geraint Jones, which led to his dismissal for 45 on Sunday. Although
Jayawardene's action was not directed at any umpiring decision, but he
was only venting his anger at getting himself out, he still copped a
fine from ICC match referee Alan Hurst because his act fell under a
Level 1 offence.
Level 1 (1.2) under 'Offences and Penalties' says: "Abuse of cricket
equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings."
The maximum fine for a Level 1 offence is 50 percent of a player's
match fee. |
