Police will ensure Govt's principle of ensuring human rights in search operations - GP on limited search ops.

COLOMBO: Inspector General of Police Chandra Fernando said yesterday that the Police have been compelled to conduct limited security and search operations due to the current security situation in the country.

While doing so the Police will strictly adhere to the government's principle of ensuring human rights, democracy and pluralism in the governance of the country.

As such all Police stations have been instructed to adhere to the principle of ensuring human rights of individuals in the conduct of these operations and making arrests.

They have been told that whenever persons are arrested on suspicion during these operations their next of kin should be immediately notified about it in writing giving details about the place where such persons are detained.

Police stations have also been notified that issuing such a document to the relatives of the arrested persons is mandatory and that this rule should be observed in respect of all arrests made during such search operations.
