Life is worth living
Review: Lakmani Setunga
Life is a gift so dear,
Life is a dream that's near
Life is a miracle, you and I
- Anushka Wirasinha
THEATRE: The seniors of Colombo International School with a
cast over 30 students delighted the audiences with two hours long
musical, full of catchy tunes when they presented God answered my cell
phone call in Colombo recently.
God Answered My Cell Phone Call is an original, brilliantly written
play by Anushka Wirasinha, whose talents are immense in academic to
writing and fashion.
She selected a plot which is very relevant to many youngsters who
face life's many obstacles and strive to resolve those with their own
might.
The story evolves around a young journalist/writer Jess, splendidly
portrayed by Romany Arrowsmith, by her excellent speaking and attractive
singing. Her life seems to be in disarray.
Her friends Addy (Viren Dissanayake) and Kelly (Omari Bodhinayake)
try to help Jess in their own capacity to overcome her financial
difficulties and suggest various options. The plot takes a twist when
Jess's mobile phone gets connected with God during a thunder and
lightning session.
From that time onwards Jess's life becomes God's vessel in
communicating with the spirit world and the people around her.
Jess, inspired by God and under His guidance tries to solve many
mysteries which were claimed to be closed cases due to insufficient
proof and facts. Jess believes and proves that life is worth living and
advises all friends to believe in God, and to treat life precious.
Fifteen-year-old Dominic Johnpillai's music ability was astonishing.
The music manoeuvring and presentation was noteworthy and the young
budding musician's capabilities were quite evident.
The play's costumes were contemporary. Lights and prop were handled
well, using the latest technology of graphic images of a computer to
give more emphasis to scenes.
The script was well meant, and had a lot of insight. The only
drawback, it was too long for a school play.
The audience felt somewhat restless towards the end of the play due
to long delays in setting up of the next scene. All in all, it was great
verve put up by the seniors of CIS and ably balanced and directed by
Petulla Joseph. |
