Dikwella Resort & Spa...
... a bit of mediterranean down South
Prasad ABU BAKR
'THE sea is the same everywhere in the world' that is what you and I
would think. But not Enzo Azola; who has lived in Sri Lanka for over 30
years and has a good reason to do so.
As Chairman and Managing Director of Dickwella Resort & Spa in
Bathigama, a village with a little intimate image with no tourism on its
list of credits Azola started off this Rs. 120 million project in 1981.
"The sea here is quite different from the rest of the country" said
Azola briefing how and why he selected this particular point to build
his hotel out of all places in the resplendent isle.
The infatuation with this isle after so many long years of 'good
times and bad times' can only be understood by him alone, call it
conviction or commitment. Azola proves to his guests that he is right.
The property reaches out to the ocean which is visible from all parts
of the hotel. Be it in the pool, restaurant or in your bedroom, the sea
plays its hues of emerald and turquoise creating an enormous backdrop to
the entire resort.
Besides its breathtaking appearance the hotel offers to its guests
many possibilities of making one's stay there more than pleasant. An
array of water sports activities are on offer and is being well utilised
by the many foreign guests that choose to stay at the resort.
"There are many visitors who come in specially for such activities"
said General Manager Bhathiya Gunasekara, explaining that many
nationalities stay with them with Italians and British tourists topping
the list.
This 66-room abode has been elevated into an even more luxurious and
comfortable hide-out for its guests since its recent refurbishment
following the massive setbacks it suffered in the tsunami disaster.
"I faced it as a matter of challenge, in fact it made my resolve
stronger and my need to do more for this resort, its surroundings and
the people that live in it, whom I have known over the years became a
pivotal necessity", said Azola.
Even the public areas have been improved and converted into units
that cater to in-house guests with comfort in mind. A menu which varies
from local to european and continental gives guests more than a few
options to choose from.
To keep one's health and looks in peak condition the 'Sanctuary Spa'
has many tips and hints on offer. If you are spending an extended stay
at the resort, the management is capable of organising an all intensive
sight-seeing tour enabling one to visit sites of historical and
religious value and also a tour along the wildlife trail which includes
a bird watching expedition where a wide range of birds can be seen.
Dikwella Resort & Spa offers the best options for everybody, be it an
intimate family outing, office outing or for honeymooners seeking to
spend their time amidst private and tranquil surroundings.
As it was described at the beginning of this article it is holiday
down south with a bit of mediterranean attached to it.

Chikako who came to Sri Lanka soon after the tsunami, held a concert
in Colombo to raise funds for tsunami victims. This was sponsored by
Hotel Tree of Life with the coordination of the Japanese Embassy.
During her present visit Chikako will also inspect some of the
projects carried out from proceeds of her concert. The opening ceremony
of the luxury villas at Hotel Tree of Life was followed by a musical
evening where guests were entertained by Chikako, backed by the hotel's
band 'Swift Fire'.
