G.M.S. Samaraweera passes away
ANURADHAPURA: The funeral of G.M.S. Samaraweera (68), the
former Governor of the North Central Province and a retired High Court
Judge will take place tomorrow in Anuradhapura, his home town. He died
in Colombo on Thursday.
Educated at Holy Family Convent, Anuradhapura and St. Thomas' College
Bandarawela and Guruthalawa he entered the Colombo Law College and
passing out as an advocate was a junior to the late H.W. Jayewardene QC.
Thereafter he served the Army as its Legal Officer after which he
joined the Bribery Commission. In 1974, he joined the judiciary as a
Magistrate and retired as a High Court Judge. He served on retirement as
the Governor of the North Central Province for five years.
Later he was the chairman of the Commission into the Affairs of the
Public Trustees' Department and held several other posts.
His cremation will take place on Sunday at the Harischandra Park in
Anuradhapura. |
