Tamil cinema enjoys a siesta

CINEMA: The Tamil film industry which was flourishing with the
release of some fantastic films last year is facing an unexpected
downfall. When some of the greatest hits like "Chandramukhi" of last
year are celebrating an anniversary at the box office, there are many
other recently released films which disappeared in the air without
notice.
The reason behind their failures was not the quality but they lacked
the well nurtured story. Most of them had commercial elements but did
not have the aspects which normal filmgoers expect while at a cinema
hall hence most of the films could not make a steady stand at the box
office.
The latest hits recently were Ghajini and Sivakasi after which many
films did not shine in the box office. The rating for the recently
released films flows according to their commercial success. Pattiyal has
conquered the first position with its fast moving action based script
and youthful cast.
The movie revolves around two orphans who become thugs. The movie is
extremely violent showing merciless brutal murders by the protagonists
who are professional killers. Just to add a bit of emotion to the
climax, two female roles have been included. The climax evokes sympathy
with the death of the two protagonists.
The characters have been portrayed with spontaneous outlooks
especially Bharath, a serial killer who is dumb and deaf. Aarya has been
portrayed as an alcoholic, whose aim is to earn money by hook or by
crook. Pooja comes in as the pair for Bharath who blindly falls in love
with him ignorant of his background.
The pair for Aarya is the "Thavamai thavam irunthu" fame Padmapriya
who appeals the audience with her remarkable performance in the song 'nama
katila' which is a remix of an Ilaiyaraya's memorable song by his son
Yuvan Shanker Raja.
Every man is crazy for money but if it is earned through injustice
then the same craze for money could lead to destructive consequences
which is the message passed at the end.
The film holding the second position is Chithiram Pesuthadi. This is
one of the rare Tamil films. The film depends on newcomers with a very
strong planned plot. The base of the story is nothing new but it is a
violent love story captured interestingly.
The film moves with extreme violence before love and then slows down
in harmony after the protagonists fall in love. This difference creates
curiosity on how the movie is going to proceed and what is going to
happen to these characters.
The movie also shows how love could change the attitude of even a
belligerent mind. The highlight of the film is the song 'vala meenu'
which has no relevance to the story but stands as the memorable part of
the movie with Malavika's mind-blowing dance and Gaana Ulaganathan's
fast beat song.
Kalaba Kadhalan is the film which follows Chithiram Pesuthadi in the
rating. This film has a well-planned plot with unexpected twists and
turns fore-shadowing the up-coming scenes. The plot is authentic in its
own way by again seeing love from a different angle.
The theme is around a woman who falls in love with her
brother-in-law. The film shows how the genuine hero fights his
sister-in-law to get rid of her and give her a fresh life with someone
who loves her truly.
The film ends showing that her love is stronger. Aarya has been given
a mature role to perform and he has made use of this opportunity to his
fullest.
The other films following this order are Thambi,, Kalvanin Kadhali
with amazing music, Dishum, Mercury Pookal etc. All these films are full
of commercial aspects such as fast beat music, hilarious comedy,
marvellous choreography and astounding stunts but they do not carry much
weight in thier story or nothing peculiar in them.
These days for a movie to be a long lasting success, it requires all
aspects of film making especially the story. The difference between the
successful films and these are that, all box-office films have a
well-planned story and clear screenplay whether they possess a sturdy
plot or not.
Some of the most expected big tickets for this summer are Thirupathy,
God Father, Vetai Adu Vilaiyadu and Imsai Arasan 23 Puli kesan.
Thirupathy and God Father are the most anticipated films of ultimate
star Ajith. Thirupathi is already doing well in the theatres with all
masala elements blended in the movie.
God Father is his next milestone to hit the theatres soon while all
its sound tracks selling fast with A. R. Rahman's extraordinary peace of
music creation after a long gap. Vetai Adu Vilaiyadu is the movie with
puzzles casting the maestro Kamalhasan and the current top heroine
Jyothika.
The movie has been shot fully abroad mostly in the US and revolves
around a detective. Imsai Arasan 23 Puli Kesan is the longest title
given to any Tamil film in recent times.
This film produced by Shanker is the first movie where the current
king of comedy Vadivelu will play the leading role as a king. It is the
story of a famous cartoon character created by Simbudevan in the famous
Tamil weekly Ananda Vikatan.
It is also the expectation of the industry that with the release of
some of these films, it is possible to take back the situation to normal
as before. |
