A startling revelation in a newspaper was that food inspectors of the
Colombo Municipal Council found sausages contaminated with Salmonella
being sold in a reputed supermarket. The manufacturers of these sausages
are said to be avoiding presenting themselves in the courts when a case
has been filed against them. Perhaps they are waiting till all the
contaminated sausages are sold to unsuspecting customers!
It is very disconcerting when bigwigs in the food industry thumb
their noses at law enforcement authorities and carry on business as if
they are all above the law. These being days when magnates of big
business and industry talk glibly about corporate social responsibility,
it is indeed regrettable when some in their midst behave in a criminally
negligent manner.
It is also unfortunate that the name of the manufacturer was not
mentioned in the news item as that would have made the public wary of
buying his products.
I sincerely hope that the relevant ministries e.g. the Ministry of
Trade and Commerce, and Consumer Affairs and/or the Ministry of Health
will take prompt action, perhaps through the AG's department to bring
the errant businessman to book.

Reference article on Sir Ivor Jennincs (May 2), I graduated from
University of Peradeniya in 1984. I knew all about Sir Ivor Jennings
from my father when I received the admission letter. It is sad that I
was never able to find any piece of material within the campus premises
that reminds/or make people aware of the founder.
I take my hat off for the wonderful layout of the university. The
planners/designers have well thought of every aspect of a university
life.
I have been to other universities (Hong Kong and Melbourne), but
Peradeniya is my best in terms of the design. I hope Andrew Scott's
article will wake up responsible personnel at the university.
