Performing artistes tarnish their image
by Kasturiarachchi Warnakulasuriya
ACTING: "Art is for the sake of art" is an old adage well
said, for the sake of artistes to safeguard their own identity. But by
and by through immaturity present day artistes tend to tarnish their own
image without thinking twice on their immature behaviour.
The purpose of this article is to bring forward such pathetic
instances where the image of the artistes tend to tarnish their dignity.
One such occasion went on the boards, when "Ridee Reyak" programme
was staged. Deviating from the usual filmdom, the artistes followed a
new trend to perform their cinematography live on the stage.
This may be their heartfelt sincerity towards the cinema-goers and
spectators. But if you examine the process of a film, from its script
level, shooting, direction, production and the final release, everything
behind the scene, had been an unseen episode for the viewer.
It is due to this wonderful process, that a viewer who goes to the
cinema hall, thoroughly enjoys every bit of the film. Contributions of
various types and their contributory factors behind the scene, had been
able to mesmerize and fascinate the film-goer through character
personifications of actors and actresses of their choice, over the
screen, once a film is released.
It's just like the joy and happiness a father and a mother get upon,
a newly-born baby, where a nine-month process was a secret of their own.
In short stage is stage; filmdom is filmdom. What happens in deviating
from this process of filmdom, is utter caricature bringing cheap
liveliness to performing artistes and especially degrading the role of
the film director.
The dignity of labour, and celebrity of all concerned, are tarnished
overnight even without their knowledge.
Another instance is matured and talented performing artistes have not
seriously thought of their celebrity and go on third class cheap
advertising over the electronic media for money-making. Some ads tend to
make fools of themselves!
The story board of a TV commercial appearing daily in respect of a
private banking promotion, can speak of volumes regarding this folly.
Oriental singers are today going through the mind set of western show
biz and follow the habit of encouraging dancing in support of their
singing. This is yet another instance where the singer tends to lose his
dignity.
When there is background dancing over the shadow of a sing song, the
whole attention of the audience goes into the dance recital and not to
the particular singer's performance. As a result of the background
dancing troupe, the gravity of the song will be lost.
If you compare and contrast a singer's performance in the past, you
can realize how his or her voice prevailed in full-swing until his
performance is over, without any exterior disturbance.
Let our performing artistes think twice before they embark on such
immature low quality behaviour, to safeguard the good reputation and
dignity of their respective roles.
Hence the old saying "Arts is for the sake of the arts" is indeed
valuable, when you think of the "young ideas" of some immature artistes
who tend to deviate from old age idealism and modesty. |
