REMEMBERING HISTORIC EVENT: Russian Ambassador Alexey Shebarshin and
the delegation from Moscow City Government visited Grand Oriental Hotel
(GOH) to witness the room in which Anton Paulovich Chekhov, popular
author stayed during his visit to Colombo.
Anton Paulovich Chekhov stayed in the Grand Oriental Hotel from 12th
to 18th of November 1890 on his return from Sakhalin Island to Russia.He
landed at the Colombo harbour by the Russian ship named St. Petersberg.
He started writing his famous novel "Gussev" during his brief stay in
the Grand Oriental Hotel.
Hotel Management has named the room by his name and certain amenities
that he used are still remaining in this room. |
