Historic mansion, now a luxury hotel
HERITAGE TOURISM: There is a growing demand for heritage tourism in
Sri Lanka especially among the up market clientele. This was the reason
the management decided to convert 1884 - built Hill country house to
'Manor House', an exclusive small luxury boutique in Katugastota Kandy.
This traditionally and centrally located old stately house with a
mixture of British and Dutch architecture offers 10 elegant rooms, 4
exquisite suites, showcasing the traditional Sri Lankan luxuries in a
tranquil setting.
The original Walawwa was built by the Nugawela family for their
youngest son, while they were the Diyawadane Nilames of the Sacred Tooth
Relic.
After the Nilame's death, and after its occupation by different
owners the House had fallen to a very sad state and today it has been
redeveloped.
"Most historic mansions in Sri Lanka are deteriorated. We transformed
the unique three storied landmark building into a stylish luxury
boutique hotel for the discerning tourists and visiting dignitaries who
will know the value of a place of such old world charm," said Chairman
of the Hotel Booshi De Silva. The investment for the project was around
Rs. 75 million.
"We are hoping to attract a niche segment of tourists who would like
to stay away from large business hotel type accommodations for a quiet
and luxury homely environment," he said.
The hotel also offers a ayurvedic beauty parlour, internet at each
room, outdoor barbeque, billiard room, satellite TV at each room,
library and gallery-gift shop and a business centre with internet and
video conferring. More details could be obtained from their e mail,
