Ananda clinch under 20 knock-out title

CRICKET: Ananda College put up a fine all round performance to beat a more experienced St. Peter's outfit by 52 runs in the All Island inter schools under 20 knock out limited overs cricket tournament final played at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday.

The Anandians rallied around through a fighting half century from Amal Athulathmudali to post a modest 199 and then produced a splendid effort on the field to dismiss their opponents for 147 runs in 41.2 overs.

Athulathmudali played the sheet anchor role while hitting a top score of 59 and also went on to return excellent bowling figures of one wicket for 19 runs from six overs which earned him two awards, best batsman and best all rounder in the final.

The experienced Athulathmudali laid the foundation for a good total while putting on 78 runs for the second wicket along with Ranganath Wijetunga.

However the Anandians suffered a middle order collapse as they lost three quick wickets for the addition of just 21 runs and slumped to 119 for 4 at one stage.

Lakshan Rodrigo produced a fine exhibition of leg spin bowling to claim three important wickets for the Peterites which helped him to win the best bowlers award. Udara Peiris and skipper Chatura Herath revived the innings once again with a 52 run stand for the fifth wicket.

The Peterites got off to a decent start with the openers Prabudda Perera and Dilan Udugamasuriya putting on 24 runs. But after their departure St. Peter's lost wickets at regular intervals and they never looked like making a match of it.

The Anandians changed their bowlers quite regularly with short spells and never let the Peterites settle down and build up a partnership. Fourteen year old Mathisha Perera and Malith Gunatilleke both picked up three wickets each after Gayan Rupasinghe had done the early damage.
