Petes thrash Joes, meet Ananda in final on Sunday

CRICKET: St. Peter's College will take on Ananda College in the All Island inter schools under 20 limited overs knock out cricket tournament final on Sunday at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place.

Both teams won their respective semifinal matches yesterday with the Peterites defeating their traditional rivals St. Joseph's College by 43 runs at the NCC grounds, Maitland Place and Ananda overcoming the giant killers Kingswood College Kandy by five wickets at Braybrooke Place.

St. Peter's College spearheaded by two superb knocks from skipper Hans Fernando (72) and vice captain Lahiru Peiris (44) piled up a formidable 239 and then dismissed their opponents for 196 in 46.2 overs. Fernando struck two fours and two sixes while Peiris stroked seven fours with the pair putting on 93 runs for the fifth wicket.

All rounder Angelo Mathew hit a fighting half century for the Josephians during their run chase but they fell short by 43 runs with man of the match Krishal Magage returning excellent figures of 4 for 23.

St. Peter's: 239 in 49.5 overs (H. Fernando 72, L. Peiris 44, K. Magage 30, A. Perera 28, T. Perera 2 for 58, A. Matthew 2 for 35)

St. Joseph's: 196 in 46.2 overs (A. Matthew 56, D. Karunaratne 31, H. Perera 36, K. Magage 4 for 23, L. Rodrigo 2 for 44, S. Ranasuriya 2 for 27).

Ananda beat Kingswood to play in final

Dashing opener Amal Athulathmudali completed his second successive half century to guide Ananda College to a convincing five wicket victory over Kingswood College in their inter school limited overs knock out cricket tournament semifinal match played at Braybrooke Place yesterday.

Athulathmudali hit a splendid 51 to win the man of the match award as Ananda reached their target of 108 runs with nearly 20 overs to spare. Earlier the Kingswoodians were shot out for just 108 runs against some penetrative bowling from Malith Gunatilleke, Ishara Amarasinghe and and M. Perera.

Kingswood: 108 in 43.5 overs (D. Dahanayake 47 n.o, M. Gunatilleke 2 for 8, M. Perera 2 for 22, I. Amarasinghe 2 for 16)

Ananda: 110 for 5 in 31.1 overs (A. Athulathmudali 51, W. Wijesuriya 22, C. Herath 20).
