Sampath to coach sevens team
RUGBY: Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) plans to contract
another foreign coach after New Zealander George Simpkin decided to quit
in disgust, just four days away from the national team's departure to
Hong Kong for Hong Kong International Sevens.
Sudath Sampath has been appointed as stand-in coach for the tour of
Hong Kong after national coach Simpkin packed his baggages in disgust,
following an alleged death threat from a senior Sri Lanka national
player from Kandy.
SLRFU Executive Director Dilroy Fernando said they plan to sign
another reputed foreign coach to replace Simpkin. Fernando, who will fly
to Hong Kong tomorrow to officiate as an IRB referee, said he plans to
have discussions with several prospective coaches during his stay in
Hong Kong.
Fernando added that the SLRFU is unable to take action against the
player, who mans the last line of defence, as Simpkin has only made a
verbal complaint. The New Zealander has refused to make a written
official complaint and cited 'personal reasons' for his sudden decision
to leave Sri Lanka.
