Free and fair election ensured

COLOMBO: The Government has taken all necessary steps to ensure that the forthcoming Local Authorities Elections is conducted in a free and fair manner.

An Information Department media release issued yesterday stated that the Government has taken all measures to ensure that the election is held in a peaceful atmosphere and that stern action would be taken against any element trying to prevent voters from exercising their fundamental right.

The Government has also taken strict measures to ensure that the voter's right is protected .The President has already directed Inspector General of Police and security forces to ensure that there is no breach of the peace during the poll, the release adds.

The Government meanwhile has appealed to the public to remain calm, and assist the Police and the security forces to maintain law and order and help the Government in its endeavour to respect and safeguard the democratic rights of the voters.
