Programme of Latin sacred music

REX ADMIRABILIS: Repeating a "Latin only" programme of sacred songs titled "Cantate Domino" held two years ago, St. Cecilia's Choir of St. Joseph's College, will be offering "Rex Admirabilis" a presentation of 20 compositions exclusively in Latin.

It will be held in the College Chapel on April 1 at 6.30 p.m. The seventy member Josephian Choir, consisting of Soprano, Alto Tenor and Bass sections will render Gregorian chants, hymns and polyphonic church music spanning a period of five centuries.

The repertoire includes: Palestrina's Adoramus Te, Allegri Miserere. They will sing Panis Angelicus from Caesar Frank in 4 parts, Mozart's Ave Verum, Sanctus from his Requiem, Cantate Domino by Hassler and Tu Es Saccerdos and Regina Coeli Laetare.

Keeping with the mood of the season the presentation at the splendid Josephian Chapel will begin with the Palm Sunday Chant-Pueri Hebraeorum followed by the Chorus, Lauda Jerusalem Dominum.

Thereafter, the Choir's selection will cover themes of the Maundy Thursday - Encharist and Priesthood, followed by Good Friday music.

The programme will culminate with the Marian Easter hymn Regina Coeli Laetare followed by Rex Admirabilis and Alleluia (Nun's Chorus from Sound of Music) with cantate Domino as the fitting finale.

'Tharu Kumari' on Rupavahini

TELE-DRAMA: The latest tele-drama series on Rupavahini 'Tharu Kumari' will become the latest family saga brought to Sri Lanka's audiences by Ceylinco Insurance when it premieres on Rupavahini this April 2.

The weekly tele-drama will enjoy a prime time telecast at 9.30 pm every Sunday.

Ceylinco has been bringing family dramas to Sri Lankan homes since 1990 when the enthralling 'Doo Daruwo' was first telecast. Doo Daruwo had a record run of 230 episodes and was consistently the highest rated show on Sri Lankan television.

At the height of its popularity, research showed that over 8 million viewers tuned in to 'Doo Daruwo'.

The other tele dramas sponsored by Ceylinco at the same telecast time were Nedeyo, Sathpura Wasiyo, Sooriya Daruwo and Wasanthe Evilla - all of them gaining immense popularity and millions of viewers.

The common factor of all of these tele-dramas has been their family oriented nature which resulted in their appeal to the entire family of viewers. Ceylinco chooses the tele-dramas it sponsors with attention given to the values and morals they uphold.

A thread that has run through all of these tele-dramas is that of Sri Lankan culture and values; manifested in the trial and joys of the families on whom the stories are based.

Tharu Kumari has a stellar cast that includes much loved actors Yashodha Wimaladharma, Janaka Kumbukage, Deepani Silva, Priya Ranasinghe Ananda Wickramage, young stars such as Sujani Menaka , Jagath Chamila Maheshika Gunasekara and several fresh new faces.

Tharu Kumari is directed by Nalan Mendis and produced by Susila Productions for Ceylinco Insurance.
