Avishka (103) takes SSC to safety

CRICKET: Skipper Avishka Gunawardena hit a solid 103 from 132
balls with fourteen fours as SSC took a firm grip over Chilaw Marians SC
on the second day of the Premier League division one cricket tournament
final continued at the Colts CC grounds, Havelock Park yesterday.
SSC finished the day at an impressive 426 for 9 in reply to Chilaw
Marians SC's modest first innings total of 172 all out. Left hander
Gunawardena was in excellent form as he occupied the crease for 164
minutes and also put on 140 runs for the first wicket along with
Tharanga Paranavithana.
Kaushal Silva, Thilan Samaraweera and Jeewan Mendis also completed
half centuries as SSC went on a run spree while taking a first innings
lead of 254 runs. In fact Samaraweera and Mendis figured in a fifth
wicket stand of 89 runs after Kaushal Silva had struck 52 from 102 balls
with the help of four fours.
