Royal Park murder case:

Welikada OIC gives evidence

COLOMBO: Deputy Solicitor General Jayantha Jayasuriya submitted that the defence of the Royal Park murder case accepts that the accused stayed in a hotel in Marawila with his father on July 1, 2005 night.

The DSG made his submission yesterday before Colombo High Court Judge I.M. Abeyratne.

Examined by the Defence, Senior Assistant Government Analyst D.H.L.W. Jayamanne said he did not need a re-enactment to come to an opinion with regard to the blood splattered at the Royal Park murder scene. He could observe the pattern of the blood stains and could come to a conclusion with his knowledge.

When he was re-examined by Deputy Solicitor General Jayantha Jayasuriya the witness said he had been trained in the first year he joined the Government Analyst's Department with blood splattering in serology.

He had trained his juniors for years using re-enactment about the blood splattering patterns. They use blood from the blood bank for such enactments in their training.

Examined by Jayasuriya, Police Inspector Samarasinghe, Welikada Police OIC said he was informed of the Royal Park crime around 10.18 a.m. on July 1, 2005 and he informed Crime OIC IP Jayasinghe.

He went to the murder scene at the Royal Park Complex with his Police officers. At the 19th floor of the B tower he found the victim's body half naked fallen front side down. He found blood stains on the steps and near the body.

There were blood stains on the wall and on the railing of the stairs. He found an orange coloured plastic ornament like an earring and brown coloured stresses of hair near the body. There were plastics circles near the steps to the 20th floor, he said.

"There were blood stains, that I guessed might be fingerprints, on the walls beside the staircase of 20th and 21st floors, he said.

The witness said there was a brown leather bag on the stairs that was leading from the 20th floor to the 21st floor.

There was also a Video Library Card on which the name Yvonne Jonsson was printed. There was a key of a Mitsubishi vehicle and a box of facial tissues. Green and brown plastic bangles were found near the 21st floor.

He stated that he informed the matter to ASP Mahen Gunasekara. He also informed the Fingerprints Registrar.

Colombo Additional Magistrate Amalee Ranaweera arrived about 2.45 p.m. She inspected the site and the body was turned upside down and pictures taken.

When the prosecution presented them before the witness, he identified them. He said he took samples of the blood stains and collected the productions and forwarded them before the Colombo Magistrate.

The DSG submitted that the defence accepted the accused went with his father towards the Chilaw area between 1 p.m. on July 1 and 7.30 a.m. on July 2, 2005 and they stayed in a hotel at Marawila on July 1 night.

The defence accepted the that the mobile phone belonging to the accused's father was in possession of the accused between June 14 to July 3, 2005.

Sharman Jude Anthony is charged with the murder of Yvonne Jonsson on July 1, 2005 at the Royal Park premises.

Deputy Solicitor General Jayantha Jayasuriya, Senior State Counsel Haripriya Jayasundara and State Counsel Lakmali Karunanayake appeared for the prosecution. Hearings resumes on Monday.
