Concrete slab collapses killing labourer

KANDY: One person died when a concrete slab of a building under construction at Peradeniya University collapsed yesterday.

The slab collapsed when workmen were removing supporters of the shuttering. The labourer died on the spot.

Peradeniya police are investigating.

50 years of service to Buddha Sasana

COLOMBO: President Mahinda Rajapakse yesterday presented a felicitation volume to Ven. Prof. Bellanwila Wimalaratana Thera upon the completion of his 50 years of service to the Buddha Sasana as an erudite Buddhist prelate.

The felicitation volume is titled "Wimala-Prabhasa". President Rajapakse also presented another memento to mark the event.

The President held a cordial discussion with the Ven. Thera on matters related to the uplift of the Buddha Sasana. He listened to the views of the Maha Sangha led by the Ven. Bellanwila Wimalaratana Thera and instructed officials to take steps on some of the proposals they presented. The Ven. Thera presented two books authored by him to the President. Several other invitees were also present.

COLOMBO:The Sri Lanka Cancer Society will hold their next Poly Clinic on March 12, Sunday from 8.30 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. at No. 37/25, Bullers Lane, Colombo 7 to screen patients for all types of cancer.

Paps Smears testing, Dental and General Clinic activities too will be conducted. The services rendered will be completely free of charge.

Old Nalandians '93 group meets

COLOMBO: The inaugural meeting of the Old Nalandians '93 Group will be held on Sunday, March 12 at the S.S.C. Grounds, Colombo. All Nalandians who sat for the G.C.E. A/L exam in 1993 are invited to the Nalanda tent at the S.S.C. at 12.30 p.m. during the Ananda-Nalanda limited over encounter.
