HSBC reconstructs tsunami-affected school in Matara
ASSISTANCE: The newest block of classrooms at the Pamburana
Shariputhra Maha Vidyalaya in Matara was opened recently.
The three-storey building contains twelve well-ventilated classrooms
with the additional security feature of doors and windows. These
additional features make this block of classrooms one of the best
buildings, in any government school in the country.
The cost of the construction of this building was sponsored by HSBC,
in collaboration with the HSBC Group Service Centre, Colombo and AFLAC
International (Association For Lighting A Candle) as a tsunami
reconstruction venture.

Among those present at the ceremony were Chief Executive Officer,
HSBC Sri Lanka and the Maldives, David J H Griffiths, senior manager
operations, HSBC Group Service Centre, Colombo Judith Armstrong, and
President, AFLAC International Captain Elmo Jayawardene, other staff
members from both the bank, the HSBC Group Service Centre and AFLAC
International were also present at the occasion.
The new building was built at a cost of Rs 9.5 million.
This included a contribution of Rs 2 million from the HSBC Group
Service Centre, Colombo and Rs 7.5 million from HSBC Sri Lanka.
The foundation stone of the building was laid in July and the
construction work was completed in January 2006.
The HSBC Group has contributed to tsunami aid and rehabilitation
activities worldwide. In Sri Lanka, tsunami rehabilitation covers a
range of activities and groups, including a microfinance project for
beralu lacemakers in Mirissa, a housing project in Panadura and
drama-therapy for children. |
