JAFFNA: "In recent months the undergraduates of Jaffna
university boycotted their classes for security reasons and as a result
the university had to be closed. Now the situation has changed and they
are anxious to pursue their studies," said Prof. S. Mohanathas Vice
Chancellor, Jaffna University.
He was speaking at the opening ceremony of the third storey of the
Arts Faculty of Jaffna University, recently.
Prof. Pon. Balasunderam former Vice Chancellor Jaffna University
joined Prof. Mohanathas in the opening ceremony. Prof. R. Sivachandran
Dean of the Faculty of Arts presided the event.
Prof. Mohanathas further said that a university for the North was
opened after vociferous agitations by the Tamils of this country. Today
this temple of learning is fulfilling the aspirations of the Tamils. At
the start there was only one faculty of arts.
It has spawned into many branches of studies like commerce,
Management and fine Arts. Now the faculty is going to be further
divided, This expansion has given us joy on one side and problems on the
other side.
This is usually expected in a sprawling institution.
Commerce and Management departments he said, do not have a permanent
building. This is a great handicap. Nevertheless we have bought a land
to put up a building. The plan to go ahead with the building work has
taken off the ground.
He said that the Information Technology has so advanced at the moment
that the academic activities of different chairs had been bound together
so as to call as university education. There should be friendship
between students, professors and chairs through this binding.
The curriculum should be flexible and co-related so as to enable a
student following a certain course under one chair should be able to
select and follow a suitable subject in another.
Thus all the Chairs should be bound together so as to fulfil the
aspirations of all and thereby a prosperous life would be assured to the
people. Only if this is viable our aim will be achieve, he said. |
