Swedish Diplomat says media has to play responsible role

COLOMBO: The Charge d'Affaires of Swedish Embassy in Sri Lanka Jerker Tunberg said the media has to play its role with a responsibility when they cover special incidents like national issues and peace talks.

He made this observation at the inauguration of the TV and Radio training unit of the Sri Lanka College of Journalism and opening of the new building at Ward Place.

He said certain media did not report properly when they covered the peace talks in Geneva. The media has to identify their role and responsibility properly.

Tunberg also said it was important for the media to identify the role of a monitoring mission at a time of the ceasefire agreement.

The Sri Lanka College of Journalism that trained journalists only for the print media started a new TV and Radio training unit. They have set up a fully fledged auditorium with the aid of Sweden, Denmark and Norway.

Apart from locals, foreign lecturers will also visit the college as guest lecturers. They are conducting lessons in all three languages.
