Celltel launches local language SMS

CELLTEL, Sri Lanka's mobile phone operator has demonstrated its commitment to the telephony industry by offering user friendly and affordable services to its customers to keep abreast of evolving customer needs.

Currently Short Message Service (SMS) is a widely used method of communication. It has been made popular mainly due to the low cost of the service.

However the further expansion of this service has always been restricted mainly due to linguistic barriers. In order to over come this Celltel has introduced local language SMS. Under this new product CellCARD customers will be given the opportunity to SMS in Sinhala or Tamil.

"Celltel has always been close to the local consumer. We realized that in order to make this cheap communication method more appealing, we need to provide this service in the local language. We realized the hassle the consumer goes through when texting in an alien language" said Celltel's CEO, Dumindra Ratnayaka. "Through this service almost every Sri Lankan will be able to send an SMS ".
