UNP choice for Colombo Mayor today

COLOMBO: The United National Party (UNP) will announce its nominee
for Colombo Mayor today ending a lengthy internal tussle.
UNP Deputy General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said the party will
announce the UNP candidate's name officially today.
"However, except in the Colombo district where the party is confident
of victory, the top post will be kept open," he said.
"We have decided to keep the top positions open," he said.
Pradeshiya Sabha and Urban Council heads or Opposition leaders for
Municipal Councils will be announced following the election, he said.
Candidates' performances and their backgrounds will be taken into
consideration in deciding these posts, Attanayake said.
The Party is also to hand over its nomination for the Colombo
district today along with Badulla and a few other key districts today,
the closing date of nominations for the mini polls.
Nominations for over 90 local bodies were handed over by Wednesday,
Attanayake said. |
