Lankan delegation to study coal power plants in China

COLOMBO: Power and Energy Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne will send a delegation comprising civil society representatives, religious leaders and environmentalists of the Puttalam District to China to study the coal power plants operating in the urban environments of China.

Their experience will help make people aware of the coal power plants to be set-up in Sri Lanka. Coal utilised to fulfil around 60 p.c. of power requirement in countries such as China, India and the European Union are subject to remedial measures to eliminate possible environmental damage by use of modern technology.

In India alone there are 12 coal power plants close to urban areas while in China the total supply of power depends on coal but there had not been any known environmental damage in those countries, states a media release by the Power and Energy Ministry.
