Army Chief satisfied with Jaffna security

JAFFNA: Army Commander Lt. General Sarath Fonseka who visited
Jaffna, expressed satisfaction over the security situation in the
peninsula but stressed the Army was not ready to relax security under
any circumstances.
"We have not heard of hostile acts against Security Forces in Jaffna
following the announcement of Geneva talks and I am satisfied with the
measures by the Army to face any situation in the peninsula," Lt.
General Fonseka told the Daily News last night.
The Army Commander said the security situation in the peninsula saw
an improvement following the announcement of the ceasefire talks in
Geneva and action taken by the Security Forces.
"We have contributed our share for the improvement of the security in
Jaffna. The LTTE also stopped its hostile acts against the Security
Forces following the announcement of the ceasefire talks," the Commander
added.
"But we are not ready to relax the security in the peninsula. We are
ready to face any attack at any time," the Commander stressed.
He said cordon and search operations in the peninsula helped to
improve the situation.
The Army Commander met all field Commanders in Jaffna peninsula and
visited the Field Headquarters in Jaffna during yesterday's visit.
"The Field Commanders are happy and their morales high. They are in a
position to face any situation, the Army Commander said.
He also inspected weapons and ammunition taken into custody during
search operations in the peninsula.
The Army Chief said search operations in Jaffna and other areas were
conducted with minimum disturbances to the public. |
