CWC, UPF to decide on alliance with major party

KOTAGALA: The Upcountry People's Front (UPF) has reached an
election agreement with the Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC) led by
Arumugan Thondaman to contest the Local Government election together,
UPF leader Periyasamy Chandrasekaran said.
"We would abide by any decision which the CWC politburo would take on
whether or not to contest the elections in alliance with one of the two
national political parties," Chandrasekaran said.
He said his discussions with LTTE political leader S.P. Thamilchelvan
in Kilinochchi on Thursday centred on drawing up joint strategies to
ensure the election of an optimum number of Tamil people's
representatives to the Local Government bodies at the elections both in
the North-East and the hill country plantation areas.
It was decided to take into account the political atmosphere in the
hill country plantation areas and in the central hill country areas to
work out suitable strategies, he said.
Thamilchelvan also assured that the LTTE would endorse any decision
of the UPF to contest the Local Government election in alliance with one
of the two national political parties in all areas or in certain
specific areas provided that would benefit the Tamils in enhancing their
political representation, he said. |
