Mowlana still with working class
M. Mousoof
COLOMBO:The Life and time of Alavi Mowlana evokes curious reading
since it contains exhilarating experiences that only a chosen few would
endure. Born to parents of high lineage, for his father and mother
belong to Holy Prophet's clan, the true descendants of prophet of Islam
are venerated in Islamic societies worldwide.
His entry into politics raised eye-brows among his peers as he is a
member of a sacred family. All the male descendants of Holy Prophet are
called Mowlanas-Thangals. They are the village Chieftains, Healer of all
ills, Prayer Leaders and Counsellors of the congregation. No function
would be complete without their presence or approval.
Mowlana's ancestors were well known for pious acts. For them the
nights were long and were utilised to supplicate Almighty Allah. Thus
the Tribe came to be known as Jemel - el - Lail (Camel of the night).
But Alavi chooses to be different. His political and trade union life
has never been smooth. He has tasted both agony and ecstasy. With the
advent of Open Economy era the voice of dissent was never tolerated. It
was the question of "To be or not to be" in the climate of terror and
fear. But Mowlana would not betray the hopes and aspirations of
thousands of workers.
The year 1980 was of special significance to Mowlana. The workers
organised a campaign to demand a 10 Rupee increase to their monthly
wages. As usual he led from the front. The Government of the day setup
goons to target leaders and workers to break up the strike. Mowlana was
attacked mercilessly and nearly met his last.
While schooling at two leading educational Institutions namely Zahira
and St. Peter's, he was enamoured with Dr. S.A. Wickramasinghe's
articulation of social Justices. Since then he has taken the path of
progressives. When S.W.R.D. Bandaranaikes left the UNP to form his
"Party of the People" it was little wonder that a young and robust
Mowlana should instantly join him. The political closeness of
Bandaranaikes and Alavis has become a legend now.
Governor Mowlana is a Leader of men and Principled politics are his
forte.
Power and position do not succumb him. He is still our Mowlana
sahodaraya to all. True to his name, Alavi which means in Arabic "tall",
he is standing tall among the people, Lipton Circus and he are
synonymous. It gives deserted look if Mowlana does not organise any
picketing. He - the man of simple needs, has not made fortune.
"May Almighty grant him, Good health and Long life so that Sri
Lankans would benefit from his Political acumen." |
